Mega Media Monday 06.01.09 (Video Game Music Edition)

Yes, this is the Mega Media Monday I teased earlier today. One of my passions is video gaming, as you may have noticed, and my other passion is music, as you may have also noticed as 65% or more of the entries for Mega Media Monday have been one or the other. Over the years, there has been some excellent music in music, and as technology has gotten better, we have gotten everything from retro goodness to full-blown vocal tunes. Today is a celebration of some of those things.

Secret of Mana - Fear of the Heavens

Secret of Mana is one of those Square-Enix gems that was on the SNES that I never got a chance to play until the creation of the Virtual Console on the Wii. This is by far one of the most serene and beautiful songs in the entire SNES library. Er...ignore the wolf part at the beginning...that's weird...

Fallout 3 - Dear Hearts and Gentle People - Bob Crosby

Ok, so technically I think this is only in the preview video, but its kind of funny in a way. Here you have this post-nuked world and you see some gangsters who are trying to shoot your head off. The last thing I think of is some cheerful 50's song floating in my head. Its a good listen to anyways.

Super Mario Galaxy - Bowser Battle

This is probably my favorite boss battle song of all time. Its orchestral, epic, and also has a twinge of epicness in it. Don't believe me? Listen to it at about the half-way point where the vocal part starts up. There are no lyricsa as its just "Aaaaaaaooooohhhhhhh", but it just adds to the overall feel of the game. This is probably my second favorite out of all of these.

Sonic Adventure 2 - Live and Learn

Ok, I know most people, me included, for good reason, are harsh on the newer Sonic titles, but one thing that I will have to disagree with is the music standard. Sonic games have had a lot of great tunes, and this is the one that sticks out most in my mind. I will probably showcase others on here (there is an excellent remake of "Angel Island Zone" made especially for Super Smash Bros. Brawl) in the future, but I only want to do one franchise at a time on here.

Portal - Still Alive

This is my absolute hands-down favorite out of all of the songs on here. This is during the ending credits of the best Valve game out there - Portal (Seriously, if you like puzzles, check it out, You will not regret it), as sung by GlaDos, the evil computer thingie that tries to kill you throughout the puzzles (the wonderful Ellen McLain). I also enjoy the underlying themes of the song, especially with the passive-agressiveness, as quoted "I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now, even though you broke my heart and killed me, and tore me to pieces, and threw every piece into a fire." Genius. Go ahead and laugh, it was meant to be funny, but is so much sweeter if you play the actual game.

And? The cake is NOT lie. Hee! Ascii cake...

That does it for this week. Join me next week for some good video goodness, and then look forward especially to the week after that as I bring you some epicness in video. I can't wait!

As always, comments, light debate, lively debacle, or just asking for some cake is more than welcome. You can also email, instant message, or send me some snail mail for more suggestions and themes. I will try to cooperate the best I can XD.

Here is a starter discussion question. What is your favorite Video Game Song(s)? Sound off below!

Until next week, happy watching!
